What a lovely thing to look forward to Christy!   You must decide what size dog you want.  Very large dogs can take up a lot of space and need loads of exercise.    I have had quite a few dogs and have found that a cross breed or mongrel is often the most loyal and intelligent and are usually healthier and live longer.  They are often the most appealing to look at as well.

There are so many lovely breeds that it is difficult to say what will be best.  I hope you get some good suggestions to your question.

I have two dogs and three cats at the moment.  Dogs and cats will live together very well.  Your cat will probably hate a puppy at first and will need somewhere to hide away.  Puppies love chasing!  Make sure the cat still gets plenty of attention from you when you get the pup. Eventually your cat will get used to it and accept the dog.  You might even find that they curl up and sleep together - mine do!

Good luck.

Hi i'm Kim i have a younger sister called codie 7 and a older sister Hayleigh 14. i'm glad to hear your mum has decided to let you have a puppy! I have a black standard poodle called CALLI short for Callisto who was born on millenium day when all the fireworks were going off and a cat called Ditto. At easter CALLI was diagnosed with mild arthritis so we thought before it gets any worse we'll get her a mate a cream standard poodle male

puppy MAGNUM who we get at the end of may we found a book at Pets at Home it's called puppy training for kids by sarah whitehead and it's got every thing you need to know about puppy training the does and do nots of puppyhood. I'd love to stay in touch and see what you do get anyway then i could tell you about MAGNUM and you could tell me about your new puppy! Best of luck Kim  look forward to hearing from you x

Hello Christy I am glad that you are happy again.

Heres a great website to start your family on the way to a breed decision. Its Battersea Dogs' Home

http://www.dogshome.org/

Being a bossy boots type, FP, I have already reported Kim's q to get the email removed, Like you, I think that us oldies have some responsibilites to the young people who use this site!!
hi christy i am not glad you have given up on the idea of a horse that easy because it shows you may of got bored of it but the best breed of dog is a mongril dog as they are a lot more fun and you dot have to worry about them as much and they should exept each other because my friend has 3 cats and 2 puppies and they get along fine.

There was a thread a little while ago called 'Puppy for the Family'.  There were quite a lot of suggestions there that might help you.

hi christy , yes no probs with last question, kims mom again . Another two breeds you may considerlooking into if want a pedigree and good with children and other animals are the Bouviers very big built , good for agility and dont mault and a whippet who if arent trained to chase are a beautiful breed and very placid easy to train. On the other hand like many have said rescue centres are a good place to get good cross breeds in need of lots of love. , have you considered puppy walking perhaps or raising a brood bitch for guide dogs both of these can be rewarding too x

hi kims mum , how do i get involed in puppy walking or that guide dog thing it sounds cool !  will email kim soon my email thing has broke !!

love christy

by contacting the royal institute for the blind hq based in leamington spa warwickshire, you will mum to contact them and they will send info in the post, then if still interested you apply then home vetted for garden safety ,family suitability etc you can also use internet and type in puppy walking and all info will be given , the only problem you need to remember is that the pup will not be yours it will be taken from you for training to become aguide for a blind person so emotional attatchment with pup could be an issue although they are quickto give you another pup after taking one away should you so wish. A brood bitch is chosen by the guide dog assoc to be mated by a chosen stud dog to have guide dog puppies , the bitch lives with you and when required has pups forthe assoc at your houseand they live with you for 6 weeks pups are then taken away and the bitch remains with you as family pet, x

get a border terrier they are soo cute and coool!!!
