No, Al
IE 8 - I have never upgraded.
my back button isnt working either :/
Neither is mine .
Look .... Guys ... Try this ... you can EASILY change back.
I use it with IE8 (although I actually use FF) and here was never any problem with back button, ads, etc.
I frequently advise on using this .. You don't even then need an ad-blocker .. because this deals with all the stuff.

For XP with IE8 ...

Download this ... http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.zip

Unzip to a folder and run the bat file. Read the readme file included.

This is what's in it ... a big text file. Elementary computing ..

Quite possibly .. something in that text list is what the AB pages are loading.
This prevents any of those sites displaying, that's all.
If the components on this site can't be fixed for all .. the others can try this.
I am using FF. No problems with the back button. I changed from IE because everything was taking ages to load and the screen kept freezing. I kept blaming my computer when I should have been blaming IE.
Good move : )
Back button not working for me either, but I can right click and "back" works from there.
