This is Manx Queenie, signing off!

This is my fourth and final week as setter, although I notice that whoever succeeds me will have a five-week month to contend with – good luck to you!

By the time you read this, I shall be away on holiday as I am returning to Portugal for a few weeks, to the place where Christiana and I lived for six years before our return to the UK last summer. Having previously toured around Portugal itself, we settled on the Algarve, but chose the eastern end rather than the more populated western and central area where most of the British holidaymakers go. So we were much nearer the Spanish border, in an area predominantly Portuguese-living and speaking, and consequently learnt far more of what Portuguese life was really like.

It is still a third-world country. Only a few miles inland from the hotels, swimming pools and shopping malls many people still live as they did two centuries ago – in one-room dwellings with mud floors, food/livestock on the bare earth outside, and as age progresses, bad eyesight and few teeth as they cannot afford glasses or dentures. Yet EU money has allowed the town councils to build motorways and good roads, to get the latest technology both in communications and in medical supplies, and to encourage foreigners with money to come in and enhance this new standard of living that appears to be the norm until you look further inside parts of the country. It is as if the twentieth century has passed them by – some are now well into the new century, many are still in the 1800’s.

But they are basically a placid, peace-loving people. Not for them riots and lootings when their pensions and incomes are threatened, just a shrug and a few mutters, and then they get on with their lives much as before. We enjoyed our time there, but it is still nice to come home, despite the government, the weather, and the taxes.

Incidentally, a real Manx Queenie is, of course, a scallop – and very tasty, too!

According to normal practice, for the everyday running of MM, I shall follow this rule on word length, in that each of my pre-selected link words contains at least four letters and at most eight letters. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts!

Each of the selected link words may go in front of, or behind my challenge word.
The competition will officially close on Sunday Evening at 7.00pm, when gen2 will declare my pre-selected words and then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past. My set of four words to have their links predicted should appear below at 9.00am.
