We have completed the crossword from a book of earlier crosswords and have checked all our answers and they are correct but there is one answer that I cannot really connect with the clue and I wonder if anyone could explain it to me. Clue: Composer in need of tea and a pipe. Answer - Brier.
I can see where the pipe comes in but cannot understand the composer and the tea. Can anyone with a better brain than me please enlighten me?

Yep. The composer is Chabrier and Cha is tea Remove it and you are left with Brier.
The only composer's name I can think of that is anything similar is Britten, but it would somehow have to gain an R and lose the TTN.
I didn't see seadogg's answer (brilliant!), and it goes to show how much I know!
What interests me is the depth of musical knowledge Times readers were supposed to have in those days!
