This is 'King Jim', your setter for August.

This is the first time I have attempted anything like this. Being normally very reserved it has taken my wife. Jools. a bit of coaxing to get me here. Like “Just do it”. Having been married for 41 years I have found the secret to a successful partnership is quite simply to do what you are told.

Getting onto a serious note my background is not very spectacular. I was born and brought up in Stratford in the East End of London where my great love was West Ham United, until Jools appeared on the scene of course. In the 60’s I followed the ‘Ammers avidly and was lucky to watch them in the era of my hero, Bobby Moore. What I loved about football in those days was that the players were ‘locals’ and sportsmanship was the first priority of the overwhelming majority of the players. Alas, the game deteriorated into what I consider today as a shambles and I lost my love of the game.

But where one door shuts another seems to open and I now follow Cricket and Rugby Union where there is still a semblance of what sport should be. Ironically sport has destroyed the land of my childhood. Magnificent as the Olympic site may be, with it disappeared all the icons of my childhood, no longer can I pay a visit and reflect on the good and not so good times of my childhood. So when everyone is cheering the athletes home next year, I will be wincing as they stamp their feet on what was once hallowed ground.

The Pub was a main focal point in the old East End. When you were introduced to that environment, invariably before you reached the legal drinking age, you found that your family was already well known to the locals. It was a bit like a restraining strap and stopped you getting ‘too big for your boots’ This was a central core to the fabric of East End life. Generations of your family had passed through the same doors of ‘the Local', and it came to serve as a social, entertainment and indeed welfare centre. I wonder now that all that has been swept away on a wave of modernity, what becomes of the network of friendship and help that was an integral part of east end life. So when we are watching the gold medal ceremonies, spare a thought for those who had to make way for them and find a new life. Good luck to all of you

According to normal practice, for the everyday running of MM, I shall follow this rule on word length, in that each of my pre-selected link words contains at least four letters and at most eight letters. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts!

Each of the selected link words may go in front of, or behind my challenge word.
The competition will officially close on Sunday Evening at 7.00pm, when gen2 will declare my pre-selected words and then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past. My set of four words to have their links predicted should appear below at 9.00am.
Hmm...the East enders!
