I came across this puzzle in a 1951 Meccano magazine - aimed at young lads, and have been struggling to crack it for a few days.
It is a long multiplication in code:
XYZA mult by BC equals XYZA (times C) plus DFYB (times B tens) equals DECCA
Good luck

The solution is:

2076 * 41 = 2076 + 83040 = 85116

That does not make sense as one sum.

XYZA * BC = XYZA * C + DFYB * B * 10 = DECCA

Please clarify.
The solution is:

2076 * 41 = 2076 + 83040 = 85116

Sorry, I tried to describe a long multiplication sum of XYZA times BC.

XYZA
BC
--------
XYZA
DFYB
-------
DECCA

XYZA mult by C gives XYZA, next line XYZA mult by B0 (tens) gives DFYB0. Add together gives DECCA. There is no 0 in the original puzzle - possibly because one of the letters is 0
Hopes this helps
