What happens when a presenter has to say 'We'll have to bring you that report later', or 'That wasn't the correct item'? It seems to happen very frequently on national and local radio. Is there a 'producer' or chimpanzee (more likely) who has the job of pressing a button......but can't manage to do it properly?

Yes they normally have a producer or assitant who loads the tapes into the machine (bit like 8 track tapes) and then presses the button sometimes they put the wrong tape in or the machine may go wrong.
Sorry Gilf your a bit behind the times....Cart machines have largely been replaced in most stations in favour of digital media.....Mini Disc are now the most popular format for storing jingles etc and the Beeb I believe store news reports of hard drive...but the basic jist is correct that some muppet has pressed the wrong button or clicked the wrong icon.....this can play havoc with the bulletin timing as well which is also fun if your the presenter pick up the show after the hour....I've been there!
oops yeah I'm a still living in the 80's.
