I have S?ES, ?F?    but nothing seems to fit ....probably something wrong with one or more of my crossers?

@Canary42 - I didn't know you actually did crosswords. 

Thinking out loud here...the unclued words are to be combined to form a new word, but not in the literal sense where you just put them together. Apart from one of the new words, it's a modern word formed from elements of the two parent words. I hope that's right otherwise I've just gone down the deepest rabbit hole ever! 

 

@FleshpotsOfDevon - they are what Lewis Carroll called portmanteau words.

Four of the pairs are fairly obvious but the other two are very obscure.

Yes I agree. 33d/42a in particular is a word that not many people of a certain age will have heard of.
