I've completed it, more by luck than judgement, but I still can't parse: 36a Poet had a collection of books (250) (5)

I've got DANTE, and I understand the ANT bit, but how are the D and E derived? I note that someone has asked about this already but I didn't understand the hints given.

P.S. Was 2704 one of the tougher ones? I thought a few of t he clues were a bit iffy.

Lie-in King parsed it a day or so ago. The D is from Had (I'd, we'd etc) and the E = 250 (I forget the details).

... I've checked Chambers, E is a medieval Roman number, for 250.

Cheers, Nac -

Dante - '(ha)D a N(ew) T(estament) E (Roman 250)'

Chambers also has "d " - the short form of had, would or did...

Thanks to everyone. Looks like I'll have to invest in Chambers.
