Thanks, NACW and davebro3! My parsing of 33 was off. I saw Che plus anagram of liberal. An answer might help me to successfully enter a few more, thanks.

33 anagram of Tito & rotten

35 italian painter

Thanks, Matakari. Glad I could help with a couple and could advise on others. Hoping this help is enough for you to make some progress now. It was a great - but tough! - puzzle, well worth the effort.

Question Author

Many thanks, JJ109 and NACW,  help for the following should get me closer.

10 Rank gallery’s preposterous ( 4 )

11 Fool eats wing of local crow ( 4 )

13 Three Germans despair drinking most of inferior spiced drink ( 5 )

25 Queen and Empress given little space ( 4 )

18 Note bird in front of church ( 8 ) : L??R????
( Still lost in spite of hints…)

10 Is a certain London gallery backwards to give a word (with which you will be familiar) for rank (am I right that you are French?)

11 The fool is a goat, around one 'wing' of local to give a synonym for 'boast' ('crow' when used as a verb)

13 Three Germans are GGG around 'most of' 'low' (inferior) to give a Swedish spiced wine. ('Despair' must be the extra word, I missed this on my solve.)

25 A thematic clue. Queen and Empress are 'RI' ('Regina and Imperatrix'). The 'space' is 'en', a term from typography (worth remembering that there are 'en' and 'em' dashes and spaces for future cryptics).

18 Another thematic. 'Note' is 'La', bird is a four-letter songbird beginning 'w', church is the C(hurch of) E(ngland).

Godspeed.

Matakari, I hope Rick's help has helped!

I realised later that you had missed out the important info (grrr), about thematic entries - that must have made it particularly tricky for those ABers who hadn't seen the puzzle. It's always good to give all the instructions!

Question Author

Many thanks for the abundant help, RickGDG, it will certainly push me further along the way. And yes, my French backround should help me with 10. I'll come back to this one as soon as I've completed this week's Spectator which looks less daunting.

Matakari, as well as answers, you've now got a massive nudge towards the theme, so I think this one must be far less daunting now!
