many thanks lie-in and roslyn, does that make 19a fiere (and why?) and is 32a regig?

Misprint in def for the last one is 'cOeval' (archaic -'equal') for FIE/RE ('fie' an expression of disgust) + last letters of the other two words.

32a REBID ('improve on previous sUit).

Ta, Prof Maisie - I saw 'fiere' & couldn't reconcile a definition 😖

...DIR(ector) [around] BE ('to continue') all reversed.

I'm sure you would have if you'd known about the misprints mentioned in the preamble L-i-K.

It might've helped if I'd looked at the puzzle, agreed 😉

huge thanks again to both, I'd never have seen coeval, or suit

It looked very tricky at first. As it came together and the end game was done, it was an extremely clever and well put together puzzle.

Still can't satisfactorily parse 31d (French friends in US city [extra wordplay letter = A?])

Xris, that A would go in front of the first two letters of the answer, thus giving you two French friends...

Thanks NaXW, FFS! 🤣

Xris, thanks. I expected you woulkd kick yourself!
