An exquisite composition ending with the perfect length of grid stare.

Thanks, Puffin.

Indeed. A nice smattering of thematic references, too. I was surprised how much I knew about the subject - I suspect from Eagle Annuals!
Lovely puzzle. I particularly liked the description of the pioneer's career and how that initiated a separate theme.

I completely agree with upsetter, "the perfect length of grid stare".

Many thanks, Puffin.
Very good - most enjoyable - some tricky clues and well hidden extra letters.

Thanks Puffin
I liked the gimmick with the across clues (must be a first?) The grid staring took me longer than others here though what was needed was unambiguous when I finally did spot it. Not that it really matters, but I don't understand the title.
I found this remarkably similar to last week's, which I also enjoyed. The theme leapt out very early on, so it didn't require a grid stare, and that is, I agree, the perfect length. Many thanks, Puffin!
Fun crossword. Took me a while to tumble to across clues and spent rather too much time trying to parse them before I relaised what was going on. Perfect grid stare for me too. Hagen, the title refers to one of the pioneer's achievements.
I was totally unfamiliar with the source material but identified the theme without too much difficulty, and the endgame was unambiguous.

The treatment of the across clues was fun.
Thanks Cruncher. I'll have to do some more reading into the subject (a weak area in my knowledge).
