how does that parse?

Hampshire is an anagram of michaels
nits

It's "fools returning" etc. (helps if you give the correct clue!)

ham slice is an ANAGRAM of Michael's innit.
of course! thankyou

Wow, excuse me for a typo, Davebro. And how do you arrive at nits and not nuts?
Returning in = ni t(ear)s
In tears... without the middle (heart)
In reversed & t(ear)s
returning IN = NI + T(ear)S

typos only matter where they affect the solution of the clue - in this case looking for a plural (fools) not a singular (fool). On the other thread missed out AS from a clue which was crucial to the solution. Just saying.
nits = returing in ...NI t(ear)s having lost heart...TS = NITS
