Adrian Chiles in the Guardian today has a problem with it - and so do I. Ihaven't bought any new furniture in several decades but the house is getting more and more cluttered.
It seems mean to leave it for the children to sort when I'm gone (as happened to me) so what is the best thing to https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/oct/20/we-need-to-stop-buying-stuff-and-i-know-just-the-people-to-persuade-usdo?

Yes over consumption is a big problem
Yes its true. Grandaparents and parents kept loads of stuff over the years including in lofts but no-one wanted most of it when they'd gone. EVen charity shops werent interested in some. Some went on ebay, some to charity shops but alot of furniture went to the tip. We inherited old crockery sets from grandparents we are reluctant to throw in case someone asks about them or just through guilt so they fill up the garage but we know are kids wont be interested when we're gone.
I now get more pleasure from throwing stuff out and clearing a space than from buying new things.

I know exactly what you mean, couldn't agree more :-))
Sell it all at a car boot spend the money on a nice meal
Tried car boots. You ask for £5 someone tries to knock you down to 50p. Most people are traders looking for a killing on bargains or are people like us selling not buying
You sell 20% in the first few minutes then 20% over the next 5 hours and then have to spend hours loading it all back in the car. Its the old furniture without safety labels or ugly huge welsh dressers or old cassettes/videos and collection of Teapots that noone wants but your mum/nan thought was an heirloom and your inheritance
You do have to sell cheap its the place you go when you dont want to throw away but also cant be bothered waiting for a decent ebay bid
In the loft I have boxes of stuff I took when my mother went into care and we cleared her house about 16years ago. One day I must get up there and have a clear out, she died four years ago. I keep watching the antiques programmes more in hope than expectation but I will be upset to part with most of it.
I've stopped buying stuff that is not needed. Clothing bags keep coming through the letterbox but we all wear our clothes until they virtually fall off us ( slight exaggeration here) and are then replaced. Some old clothes are useful as 'clean rag' I believe.
