pole = (south) pole of the compass
s = heads for/at head of
person from Eastern Europe = Slav

Still cannot see LAV part of answer. Am I just thick?
Well yes the S is the pole but why follow it with Lav?
sorry yours wasnt there bookbinder. I'm wondering if its not as simple as Slav begins with S
lav is an abbreviation of lavatory/toilet.
Heads is a naval term for lavatory/toilet, hence 'lav'.

None of this crossword is simple! So I still cannot be convinced that SLAV is right. Is there a logical explanation?
