HoHoHo - very true to life (not even then). Most died before they got hospital & cancer, strokes, etc. hadn't been invented!
Nice one Builder.

That made me smile Dave - when do you think cancer was erm 'invented'?
TB was the "killer" in those days! We keep inventing new ones.
LOL......whenever I read the verbose answers that you continually find on AB, it always reminds me of ward rounds and my favourite comment
"C'mon Dr, we haven't got all day just give me the bottom line",.

Listen to the patients and on 80% of the cases will give you the diagnosis without examining them,

That was real medicine and surgery and not a link to a wbsite in site
Mamya, quite a few of my ancestors died of "old age" in their 80s or even 70s. I've often wondered what that meant but it seemed to cover a multitude of ailments. Surprisingly few seem to have died of cancer; but I suspect those who died of short-term paralysis had probably had strokes.
In the Carry On films patients are laid up in hospital for days with - wait for it - an ingrowing toenail & a broken hand. PMSL

Sqad... I've always had a picture of Sir Lancelot in my head whenever I read your posts ;o)
That's a very interesting point you made.
You don't actually look anything like him... do you ?
I think my point has been misunderstood, but it's CB and I won't spoil the fun.
The Builder.

Not too dissimilar lol. You had better ask Prudie who is the only ABer to have seen me.
P.S She is sensational by the way -;)

Ahh... Prudie?

I may be wrong, but I don't think she lives too far from me. ;o)
Mmmmmmm........
My dear late mother - q 1934
I asked what was the admission rate on an ortho ward
and she said none

TB patients and the same lot were there when you left 6 months later

My father's diary 1936 reads
went in ( to barts ) for a bit of Sir Geoffrey Keynes rudeness.

Keynes was J M Keynes brother
and was the one who certified Virginia Woolf ( no admission to a psych unit wivvart a doctors cert - ie no voluntary admission ever) and a HUGE collection of Blake first editions
so no wonder he treated the students like crap
// "C'mon Dr, we haven't got all day just give me the bottom line",.//

Grayson in Plymouth used to barrack his junior staff with
keep it coming keep it coming 1975
and one of the patients said later - he doesnt give a toss about us does he?

( and modesty prevented one from saying - yeah he is far to interested in private practice. Sr Charles Lander ( sisters were named after wards and not surnames ) whom he used to address as "Sis!" - as in walking on the ward and shoutiing - shop sis
would keep and show cuttings of his sons and knife crime and prison sentences - - - oh those were the days! )
PP....lol....indeed they were the days, now replaced by forums, amateurs and that bloody website.
and the only thing that remains of Devonport Hospital is - - -
the water tower
replaced by a rather badly put up housing estate
I know this is a light hearted thread but I much preferred being told what was wrong and was to be done as was the case in the 60's to the current way of being told what is wrong and asked what I want done. I always reply, "You're the blerdy expert - you tell me what I should have done."
Apparently, I must be given choices. I don't want choices, I want the doctor to treat me in the same way you'd treat your dad if he had the same condition. How should I know what is the best option out of 10?
I also see Leslie Phillips in my head whenever I see sqad's name. Ding dong
I think one of the more poignant films from "those days" is Twice around the Daffodils. And the nurses are quite dishy!
Twice Round the Daffodils was more or less a remake of Carry on Nurse - they both came from the same stage play.
That was brilliant, builder :-)
