Thank you to all. I'm still not sure why INCARNATE is supposed to mean "in ultimate condition", and I forgot to include the following clue which I also can't parse (except for BASTE meaning "Tack"). Clue = Tack in prison, badly defective (5) B?S?E Why is it BASTE?
Baste and Tack mean the same is sewing.
