11 Across - put back equipment to get ill-gotten gains, Answer " tool". Actually it is putting back ill-gotten gains (loot) to get tool. !!?

20 Across - British subject about to punch drunk. Answer "scot" OK for British subject but where does Punch drunk" come in ?

11 should be loot, agreed

Thanks both , I haven't met 'punch' as an insertion indicator.
I wonder if we get an apology about 'loot' in tomorrow's paper ... hmm ..
11 I think the clue is correct and the answer is loot.
Put back equipment, (tool) and therefore get loot. Unless you already have the answers in the paper.
The setter wished the clue to read, "Equipment to get back ill-gotten gains" but was told it was 'the wrong way around'.

Personally not sure that is much better...but others might.
