The Tls arrives late here in France so I'm still on Tls 1371. Just got it today. The only one I can't do is 1 down. The "cheesy device" looks as if it should be a "grater" but I can't parse it. Not an anagram of "target". I'm baffled. Can someone explain? Thanks.

What is the clue, please?
Question Author
Sorry, Captain2. The clue is "A cheesy device that's off target" (6) (1 down in the Times Lit Sup crossword n° 1371). The letters I have are G-A--R.
If it's not a mistake then I don't know what the parse is, it still has a '?' on my copy.

Thanks Mamyalynne.

perhaps the clue should have read garret?
Question Author
Perhaps so, aelmppvw. The clue itself seems to be "off-target". Maybe that's what the setter was driving at! I think I'll just leave it blank. Thanks everybody for your help.
