The whole question surely is,does Matakari enter?If he/she doesn’t then what does it matter,if he/she does then the setter is right to comment in that way.Until it is proved either way we should keep an open mind.

Very, very easy for Matakari to settle that, isn't it Grumpy? And yet he won't, which is probably the very reason for the setter's remarks that you call OTT.

You, like Grumpy may call the setter illogical or OTT or whatever, but the fact is that he, the setter simply does not know whether Matakari enters his competition or not.

You may be 'sure' that Matakari would do this puzzle even if there were no prize, and yet EVERY crossword he asks for help with IS a prize crossword, there is no getting away from that fact.

I say it again, all Matakari has to do to stop all this 'aggravation' as you call it, is to let the setter know that he does not enter the competition. Very, very simple.
