18 Down : Copper charges people helping barmen in Ireland.
Answer : "Curates." obviously comes from symbol for copper and rates for charges.
Cannot find any connection in Ireland to someone helping at the pub bar or helping a lawyer at the Bar.
Any ideas ?

Apparently there is some obscure definition of 'curates' in one of the more specialist dictionaries.
Perhaps someone with a Chambers or Bradford could research for us.
Bradford's
Curate, Barman, Minister, Nathaniel, Padre,
Perpetual, Priest.
Yay, thanks Tilly and Ael. (Opposite end of the spectrum to the 'usual' definition).
I didn't know Chambers was online like that, so thanks Ael that's something else I've learned (and bookmarked) today.

Thanks Tilly2 - I wandered through the internet and could not find a mention of barmen. My Chambers must be too old.
I have the 8th Edition of Bradford's. I'm probably behind the times as well.
Thank you for the BA. :-)
Apparently it is used in James Joyce's "Dubliners".
Bar assistant meaning is used many times in the novel set in early 20th C Dublin: 'Strumpet Cily' by James Plunkett.
