It's a blood complaint/condition. The second half involves an anagram, with 'runs off' being the usual stuff.
Help please with these:
3d Intelligence by which a piece of algebra is solved (7) ???I?S?
4d It holds lock secure - oddly, key isn't quite long enough (8)
?????H?E

18d Hurricane preparation: husband and I took out additional cover (8) I have R ? URANCE but can't fit eins ? ein ...yes but the s?
3d answer is in the clue (thematic element is 4 letters, English).
4d SeCuRe + 5 letter synonym (minus final 'f') for 'key'
Thanks Prof ...got 3d immediately.
You're right with 'eins' for the other one, tedsgran.
...4d is the little French addition.
how do i replace eins ....?
It's German for the No. 1, tedsgran (not 'ein', if that's what you're thinking).
of course ...thank you ...brain has gone dead!
Stuck on 3 if anyone can help please...
9d Eminent scientist moves from one place to another (4) ?R?S
FRS could possibly be letters after the scientist's name?
28a Diva's more dismal in Glasgow (5) ?C?ER
8a Lovelorn, one carries a flame: two opponents steal choirgirl's heart - might they have gone clubbing in Stratford? (9)
obviously to do with shakespeare....ending looks like EERS
for grid entry i have ?R?C?E?R?
Blame the Germans, did it really need that 's'?
You're right for 9, pomona (add an English number).
28 a German addition + the one who sang with Sonny.
If you carry this you're 'lovelorn' and take 'love' = 0 out of it [add the little French thing] then it's (choi)R(girl) inside bridge 'opponents' [add the little English thing].
...by the way, hamishsoup is too meticulous to use 'lovelorn' twice, I did it as a hint (his wordplay has 'one carries a flame' minus the 'o').
Many thanks ...all sorted thanks to those hints ProfessorMaisie
