Still 3 short with this quiz:-
1.Alkali metal without influence of old tele network (6)
2.A sound way to achieve a smooth reverse in one of these (6)
3.Up against it? Only in France (5)
Many thanks in anticipation.

I still can't improve on POSSUM (potassium minus ITA) but it doesn't fully explain the 'influence' unless that's an anagram indicator- and was ITA a network or a body?

Yes I know fiction-factory. I was hoping that some new people might come on tonight and have a brainwave. I guess it is possible that possum is the answer to two clues but highly unlikely I think
Only other one is Cosset

Cs is Caesium (one of the 6 alkali metals) + O (old) Set (TV set)
Question Author
That is certainly possible though I had never heard of a cosset being an animal before!
Nor me until I saw it on a list of animals on 'best for puzzles'. Seems to be a word for a pet lamb.
Question Author
Yes I picked that up. I certainly prefer it to possum (twice) !!
Question Author
Fiction-factory I think it might be ferret. Fe is listed as an alkali metal and terrestrial tv is an old network. Not sure where "without influence" comes in though! What do you think?
Question Author
Hi Scorpiojo. Thanks for your input. I have possum for another clue -"You help around in the afternoon" Assuming possum can only be one answer which is better?
I don't think possum works for the afternoon clue. Is that one also 6 letters?
Possum works well for 'you help around in the afternoon'.
Pm for afternoon
U for you
Sso help around (anagram of SOS)
I can see Fe= anagram of TERR but I'm not sure why Fe would ever be classed as an alkali metal- it's a metal but I can't see where alkaali fits in.
Ignoring the alkali bit maybe the setter was thinking of FERRIC without IC (in charge) (without influence) and them ET (ET telephone home!) So Ferret.
Still prefer possum (or OPossum if 7 with the O coming from old)
Question Author
Fe is listed as an alkali metal. It definitely has 6 letters so not opossum. I am quite torn - probably favour ferret if only because I am sure possum is right for the other clue. Maybe someone will come up with a different answer entirely!
Have you got a link to show me where you saw that Iron (Fe)is an alkali metal please?
Iron is not listed as an alkali metal in any list I have looked up.
Cosset looks good.- o(old) inside cs (caesium) + set (tele network)

Entry 1.
Question Author
I just googled in "Is Fe an alkali metal?" and it came up as listed.
Google has lots of stuff that isn't reliable
Question Author
Fair point fiction I think cosset looks the favourite now!
Question Author
Any chance of some help with Nos 2 & 3 please. Various possible answers for No.1 Many thanks.
