I don't know hymns.
I googled but could not find any that match.

18. Exalt and move others with content of pure hymn (14, four words)

Also:
18d. Hang around, having failed to get one’s first ‘L’ in Chicago? (5)

25d. One who recognises an edible shell (4, two words)

I still have 3 to go but these will help me .

Thanks.

Got 25d. The missing letter occurs twice.
18 A six-letter word for 'hang around, lose a letter ('having failed to get one's first'. The answer will be 'L' in Chicago
18 Exalt = ???? Up... It's not a hymn I'd heard of (but there are lots of those!)

Got all 3.
Will be back with one or two.

Thanks NAC. But posting did magic. I got them.
For 18a, I had one letter wrong.
That's good, Hankir - more satisfying to get them yourself! I really enjoyed this one, I liked the ending.
I am missing the same three as Hankir but despite helpful posts, I am just not getting any of them, could I ask for a little more guidance please.
18 'exalt' = two words (4+2 letters) then minus the Y from the next 4 letter word, and the A from the last word.
18d 6 letter word for 'hang around' but minus 'O(ne's) first' = a US measure.
25d the first 3 letter word is the usual for a marine creature (2x A dropped).
DD, the second hint for 18 D was quite similar to the first - just say if you'd like another nudge!
Thank you PM & N. Managed to muddle through 25d with a no of groans and you have confirmed the first two words I have for 18a but the final two words are not fitting, the two suggestions I am trying to fit in are either 5 & 4 which would allow the Y or 3 & 6 which wouldn't, whatever I try makes a gobble-de-gook of the RH name, another nudge please.
PDM....................I have it, wrong pronoun. still need a nudge on the other thank you
DD, 18 is 4,2,4,6 - before modification.
If it's 18 D, you might do it with intent....
Forgive the late reply, thank you N that is the word I had in mind but cannot see the connection to losing a L or Chicago, nor can I get my head around 28a. Have the book & author, indeed it was quite a cult book when published, can't say I really enjoyed it.
L = (abbrev) LITER in USA
28 TaRgEtS ('often' meaning 'regularly' in this instance) outside R(esistance) O is missing from the real answer.
...O is missing twice, of course, from the bullfighter.
...just to clarify 18d L(o)ITER is the wordplay - 'L in Chicago' is the def.
Many thanks All, made it in the end.
