14a One divining gold, unrefined stuff, from cane (5) AUGU _
presumably AUGUR
One divining = augur, gold = au, unrefined stuff from cane "gur"??
NB there is a note that one abbreviation today is not included in Chambers, could it be this question as I have completed the rest with no problems.

Many thanks

GUR is in Chambers as unrefined cane sugar.
Gur (jaggery) is unrefined sugar.
Question Author
Many thanks both - Gur was not in Collins! - and all I could think of as an abreviation was "ground under repair". Augur it is then, thanks

PS is "e contrario" in Chambers?
Yes.
Question Author
Thanks v-e
In that case I haven't a clue which one isn't in Chambers!
...between e contra and e converso.
Know au is gold and other letters are cane sugar gur so think you are right
As most compilers use Chambers it makes sense to have a copy.
You may have solved the relevant clue without having to look it up.
JJ are you looking for economic?

I wish I had one JD, but until I either return to the UK (last time 2006) or go down to Bangkok (500 miles away!) I am stuck! I can't rely on post as I get a delivery approx once a month and 33% of all my mail gets "lost".

Thanks Tony - but no, the answer is definitely e-contrario (it is an anagram of "or reaction" and means "not at all".
I think the missing abbreviation is SRA for 'senora' in 6d.
Question Author
Thanks Iminoz - if Sra is not in Chambers, then that will be it. Puzzle solved!
J J don't know if you can get Chambers or something similar free online or have you already tried?
Question Author
Thanks Tony - Chambers is on line, but not the version with all the alternative spellings and dialectic words. Collins has a lot and general "googling" sometimes picks them up, but not always. I generally can solve the clues via the wordplay, but it leaves me frustrated that I often cannot confirm the answers that I have worked out.
Do Amazon operate in Thailand?
OK JJ I'm not much of a wordsmith, numbers are more my thing. But you got your gold clue in.
Question Author
They may do JD but I don't have credit cards either, as I never used them when I emigrated and each company cancelled my cards for non-use. I also don't trust the internet for buying things here! I will just carry on solving as at present, and just ask the occasional confirmation here. Many thanks for everyone's help.
