I'm having distinct difficulties with this one!
I've solved about a third of the clues (I think!) but they're all 4, 5 & 6 letter ones. What I need to find are which the 12 letter ones are with a hint of how to solve them (I'm not asking much!)
Also as I haven't enough 'removed' letters I've no idea as to the title, author and translator.
I'm really stuck, but I hate not completing these fiendish crosswords, also I'm freezing cold which doesn't help!
Thanks in advance.

The 12s are both straightforward anagrams - one answer begins with an I, the other with an S.

The author's name starts towards the top of the third block of clues, with two initials + the surname (which runs on into the 4th block of clues).

Hope you're beginning to warm up now Ripper.
... 'straightforward' is not quite accurate - I neglected to mention the letter removed from the anagram fodder in each case - for the I answer it's an S, and for the S answer it's a U.

Thanks ProfessorMaisie, I'm still struggling, but hubby has suggested we go for a walk (in this freezing weather?) so I'll have another look when we get back if I haven't got hypothermia!

Raise the flags - I've now got the book, author & translator and one of the 12 letter words!
Walk was freezing especially as we has a choc-mint ice cream!
Madness!
