looked on there donny and found a bit of stuff but both me and my mate are insistent that it was used on a british tv programme from late 70's / early 80's
As someone who watched a lot of TV in the 70’s and 80’s the only one I could think of that comes vaguely close is this:

Or maybe this?:

Some mentions of use on media here but largely not British.

Will keep digging.
Reporting Scotland used it in 1979.

thanks everybody so far - i'll look back a little bit later - cheers steve p
Fanfare for the Common Man was also used as a theme tune for the TVS programme 'Enterprise' as well.

Though I don't know that programme.
Wasn't it used as a theme for tv coverage of one of the space missions? That was the first thing that sprang to mind when I saw the question.
Yes it was and some sports events too.
Trivia note for ELP fans - the recorded version of the music that was released was supposed to be the initial studio run-through before recording, but in fact, the tapes were running, and the 'run-through' was captured.

Just as well, because after about thirty more tries, the band decided that the 'run-through' was the best version, so barring a few minor overdubs, that is what became the finished product.
Was it not the theme to a sports celebrity programme hosted by Ron Pickering/David Vine? Sports stars of the day had to complete various tasks, e.g. bike riding, sprinting, obstacle courses etc. Can't remember the name of the programme though. Something like Champions or such.
You mean this, 10ClarionSt?

Thanks CHilldoubt. That's the one but obviously the music's not what I said. :o(
The Superstars theme (Which started out as the Monday Night [Amierican] Football theme) is called Heavy Action, and was composed by Edd Kalehoff.
