As it's a down clue - Sub is North of side (Port is a side)
Sub is warship, port is a SIDE, port and starboard.
that's the direction, N, S, E, W Port, Stern etc.
I'm taking 'North' as used on a Crossword grid - ie above.

So the warship is above the port when you write it in.
I've not seen the grid - just going by directions on ship
It's a down clue therefore the first part is north whatever the crossword - Port isn't North.
Oh right, I'm looking at it from the clue given
Well, me too.
we're coming at the same angle from different angles ;) hope OP now knows why
Me too - North is 'oop' :-)
I know, in every way, my brother has a cruiser on the shannon and I'm familiar with the nautical bits :)
Book me a cabin on the Port side, that would be fun.
I like portside cos it's like the road way, I'm always close to the bank of river (if I need to jump out) he has 3 strapping lads that take up half the boat - great gas though
Sounds smashing.
'tis, especially as you travel by Ardnacrusha, that's just magic
