23A Key in on purpose (6). Feeling particularly stupid and hoping for some light to be shed by some kind answerbank participant!
I had L_G_N_ and could only come up with 'legend' but couldn't work out why. See this question got asked by someone else and the answer given was 'on' at cricket = 'leg' which I do know being a cricket fan and 'end' = 'purpose' which is fine. That therefore builds the answer cryptically but what has the whole word 'legend' got to do with 'key in'. Explanation much appreciated.

A legend can be a caption explaining a picture or diagram, telling its purpose.
And also act as the key to a diagram.

Thanks very much sandyRoe. I did think legend was possibly used in that sense but a couple of explorations of definitions/meanings etc didn't seem to oblige with any confirmation so I thought a fellow answerbanker would probably be a quicker and clearer source of help!
