hi, the answer to POARD turned out to be Christmas eve, after eve pollard as HEATON21 had offered in a later response
I do not think the quizmaster realised that POLLARD was the name of a tree when he set the dingbat.however, when the answers started coming in I think he then should have accepted this fact. in his explanations he says that if you did not mention 'christmas' you could not possibly be right but a lot of people would have put 'trimming the Christmas tree' as their answer and therefore they have mentioned 'christmas'. the quizmaster then goes on to make a distinction between 'trimming' and 'trimmed' but the point was there had been a 'trim in the tree'
only 18% of people managed to get 'Christmas eve' and I suspect nearly 82% went in my view correctly for pollard being a tree and not everyone would have heard of eve pollard, I still cannot believe that was the answer to this dingbat was 'Christmas eve' , ambiguous to say the least.

Thanks, mamya. Not Sue Pollard, then :-\
I didn't realise she was Claudia's mum, Mamyalynne.
And Imust admit, until you said it was journalist I'd been picturing Vicky Pollard
Oh yes, I think I meant Sue Pollard- the one off Hi-de-hi

thank you for your opinions, I think it proves that eve pollard is not in everyone's vocabulary, but my point was that pollard as a tree was much more obvious to the quizzer and I do not think the quizmaster realised that pollard was the state of a tree when he set the dingbat, trust smouse to be the odd one out!
even when heaton 21 posted 'Christmas eve' as the answer on the 3rd jan 2014 I still thought it was way off as an answer. it's a pity really because answers like 'epiphany' and 'fezewig' were excellent and well thought out but there is always one isn't there ,smouse
