Thanks folks! Not sure about "levying",DannyK, which is 26 down, and doesn't fit with"lyrate" which is 33 across.

Then again, levying fits my other letters and gives me the answer to 30 across so perhaps it's "lyrate" that's wrong?

I hate cryptic crosswords...!!
syrinx
I worked them out as follows Levying -the french= le, trying = vying.
lyrate- anagram of tray in the french le = lyrate.

I had "syrinx "to begin with ,mallyh, but couldn't fit it into any of the Down clues. It would be where the "Y" is in levying..Hmm

Your answers seem right,DannyK,duh..

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa....Guess who was trying to fit the right clues into the wrong spaces, my excuse is that the print is too small and yes, I do need some new reading glasses!!!

Lyrate and levying are both correct, dannyk
