Does anybody know a 5-lettered word meaning 'Atmosphere' with the pattern E _ E _ E ?

The 1st 'e' comes from 'Thread' as an answer to 'A strand of cotton';
2nd 'e' from 'Witness' answering the clue 'Observer';
3rd 'e' from 'Heeds' from the clue 'Hears'.

'Watcher' is an alternative to 'Witness' and 'Harks' an alternative for 'Heeds'. That would allow the word 'Ether' for 'Atmosphere'.

However, the clue for 7d is ‘Cease’ (6) and the answer comes from the last letters of the 3 clues above with the pattern D _ R __ S _ ... I have put 'Desist' as the answer.

Apologies for any confusion in my request. Thank you.

apologies if I have misunderstood but ether looks pretty good,as does desist,if it was watcher instead of witness would they both fit?
Without seeing it very difficult to work out!!
No confusion, but still unable to help...

I presume I have this right

Watcher would allow for ETHER but leave D?R?S? for cease

witness would allow for DESIST but leave E?E?E for atmosphere
What if it was watches instead of watcher
Sorry, thought the clue was witness. I like ether & desist. Hard to follow without seeing.

Thank you, vakayu. No, watcher and witness won't both fit.

Thank you too. Mamyalynne. You have identified the problem. Wish I could find the answer!

I thought of 'Watches', Svejk, but it's a verb and the clue is a noun.
No words will fit in so something else must be wrong. Will keep trying!
Could be their mistake and the clue should be 'Observes' allowing 'Watches'

Thanks, elliemay1.

You're probably right, Mamyalynne.
