Just done the DM in the pub (too tight to buy it today). Although i have seen some answers on here today which aided me, who actually got 'ISTHMUS' without looking it up. I only had two letters to arrange and had no idea. Does the setter really think most people who challenge this Xword can complete this whilst away from books or the PC. ?

Stately Spanish galleon coming from the Isthmus,

Yes shooty, in many cases they do.
Hi shooty - in all honesty I suspect I'd have seen it from that clue - but then it's a fairly common word here in Corinth...
A strip of land connecting so a bridge in effect.

Approx' 16 years ago, my daughters Christmas school play had a song called "Christmas on the Isthmus". I'm glad I remembered it today!
I would have got that answer no bother. Whether I could have enunciated it without gobbing saliva here there and elsewhere, is another matter.
I'll get me mop.
worked it out from the anagram
Yes, I learned about the Isthmus of Panama at school and I have always loved the word
Yes, but then I should.

Well its obviously just me then lol. I had the full hit 'I?T?MUS' and had no idea where to put the S and H. I felt like putting them where the sun don't shine, but I didn't know where the setter lives. : )
I can remember an isthmus being mentioned in a episode of 'Porridge'. Perhaps someone might be able to find it on you tube!
