1 D. Old spray in stream? Right! (4) ??a? (Possibly ??ar)
5 D. Irishman getting horse dropping head (4) ??i?

This puzzle says 'extra letters created by wordplay in these clues provide a quotation'. I've got the quotation, so for 1 D. the extra letter is 'n', for 5 D. it is 'r'. Any help would be much appreciated.

The answer for 5D won't be allowable once the new BRB becomes official. Does that help?

My question is - are the items round the perimeter real words?
Question Author
Not really - but thanks anyway! Those were my last two clues in this puzzle - maybe I'll be inspired in the morning, when I look at it again.

Sorry, I missed your bit about the perimeter. The preamble says 'four items in the perimeter provide appropriate thematic illustrations' - I took this to mean that I'll find four things hidden in the string of letters all the way round the grid.I assume the items (whatever they are) are real words.
Nical - not giving too much away by saying that they are not 4 real words. If you follow the quotation you should get there.

I finished this off this morning - my answers are real words!
"horse" is heroin - behead the 'h' and take the 'r' (beaRing) away.
Eoin is an Irish male name.
"horse" is heroin. behead that and remove the 'r'. Eoin is an Irish male forename
Sorry, Nical. I just joined to post that and didn't realise my first response had already been accepted. Y

Ysaid - thanks anyway!
Hi Nical
My answer to 1D is a commercial brand name (chemical) but it is in Chambers. I've nearly solved everything bar 4D and 9A. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Apologies Nical! On reading further down I've discovered that you've now finished this puzzle. I'm still stuck on my last two however!
Question Author
I might remember my answers if you give the clues for 4 D and 9 A.
I haven't finished this one yet but i have the two your looking for Indy-trier. Both are very unusual words and I'm not quite sure how 9 across works. 4 down is a word for floats and the missing A in the word play is from ROW (think boat) If you start ( 9 across with an unknown you will find the word (after a hunt) in Chambers. Hope that helps
Sussed it out now.9 across has an I missing. I was unfamiliar with the first part of the quote as given. A really tricky crossword I found particularly 1 down which took some considerable time
Thank you mullingar. My wrong answers were stopping me completing that part of the perimeter. Have now finished. Very enjoyable puzzle!
