I've just started tackling a fiendish looking grid! It's too complicated to explain, so I was hoping for a little bit of help as I've ground to a halt.
43 A. Plant's fruit sliced by kind woman (8) si??????
1 A. Twisted armband worn by golfer bearing 'x'(not X). (8)?????le?
Thanks.

Thanks. I'm making progress, albeit at a snail's pace.

Thanks, kettledrum. I didn't manage to finish this crossword,it was rather convoluted for me!
Hi Nical! I'm finding it hard going too. I've filled the grid, but can't satisfactorily rearrange the shaded letters, so have no ideas about how to progress from here.
Really struggling with this. The 3-(4-letter clues, I have a female artists name. But am totally at sea regarding the 3-letter (alphabetical order of answers) Could some kind person give me a solution to one of these clues and I may be able to work the rest out from that.
Most are completed by crossing clues; some are in the BRB (the first one for example - this appears at 30ac), others like the 4th are not (this appears at 25ac. and is fairly easy to solve). Note, definitions and wordplay give full answer as in a normal clue. Hope this helps, without giving too much away! I think the 3rd of these refers to some journal, but I suspect there are several with the same initials.
Hi judypark
I've finished everything and am now working on the elusive "shade 61 squares" bit! For the first seven 3 letter words (the abbreviations) you have to ignore the link words such as "of" and concentrate on the rest of the phrase. For the journal clue the word "tending" is an important hint. Hope this helps! Now - if anyone has any tips re the 61 squares . . . . .
Just finished this. Absolutely loved the ending, superb!!! I'm not spoiling it for anyone as there's plenty of time left to finish it:-)
Yes, a nice finish Wideernie. Without (I hope) giving much away, I can say that my rearrangement of the 10 greyed cells seemed, at first, decidedly unpromising -- how wrong I was!
Pulling my hair out now. Am absolutely stuck on 1d. Have a feeling it starts calling? 2d. Is it an anagram of "bent rent boys"? Any hints?
Hi judypark
1d helps if you think of a 4 word answer first for this one. It starts with the usual 2 word response when someone knocks on a door, followed by two 3 letter words meaning No1 song. Now change the spaces to make three 4 letter words that mean "Get important".
2d is an anagram of BEAT RENT BOYS. It's 2,4,6 and the last word is street. Hope this helps.
I have now found 4 or 5 fairly plausible anagrams for the original shaded letters so am misleading myself enough to still be stuck on the other 61!! Still looking for a hint!
Thanks Indy-trier, this has given me something new to work on. Still cannot see the relevence of the female artist, but maybe all will become clear. My pop and rock books are sadly out of date, so perhaps googling the lady will help.
Indy-trier; hope this isn't too big a hint. Feed your 10-letter phrase (try each one) into Google with the 13-letter juke box source.
Wow Stymied - that's brilliant! Thank you! Such a neat puzzle too! I can now relax.
Have all but solved this and have the 61 letter answer, but just cannot solve 7d. I have ?e??n?men. Are these letters correct? A timely hint would be gratefully recieved. Thanks to all those that have helped , would have never got this far without your generous contributions.
judypark, Postcode area + think what salt and pepper are known as and remove "its"
Judypark; if you have the correct 61 letters you should have the first 6 letters of 7dn!!
PS. The letters you have are correct; the online Chambers word wizard will give you the answer; there are ony two options.
I have a full grid and the "source" (which seems to me an odd way to put it) but I cannot make anything from the shaded letters that is in any way relevant to the source. Are the three words connected to the source, or do they simply relate to "the setter's the solver"?
