Why are fizzy drinks known as 'pop'?

anyone have any ideas? is this something to do with panda pops - or did they come after the term?

It's onomatopoeic...that is, it refers to the sound made when the cork of a bottle full of effervescent liquid is opened. It's been in use for about 200 years, so rather earlier than 'panda pops'!
