Is their a verb meaning 'to hold someone hostage' or a noun for what one policeman, quoted in an American paper, called 'a hostage situation' ? ( Officials like 'situation' . I'm waiting for 'a fire situation' for 'a fire' !)

Perhaps to constrain could be used
fred, that car that's catching fire was "an incendiary situation".....
It is an adjective in "hostage situation".

It is a noun in "holding the hostage".

An adverb in "holding hostage".

How about "enhostage" or "hostaginate" as a verb?
