How come all over Britain we have a fairly constant "Dad" but in different regions we have different words to call our Mother? I live in Birmingham and most people including me seem to call theirs Mom. What do all you other ABers call yours?

Hi, I'm from West Midlands and My Mum Is My Mum.

However my husband is from Birmingham and refers to his mum as his Mom.  This makes things easy for us as they both have different names (mum and mom) so we always know who we are talking about.

My Mum however (from North East but posh) refers to her mother as Mam, and often Mammy.

Here in Derby most seem to say mum but in the Nottingham area we used to say mam/our mam.  My grown up son calls me ma 'cos he thinks it's funny!
In the Valleys of South Wales a mother is usually referred to as 'mammy'.
well i have a ma an da an im from liverpool
I live in Perth, Scotland & my mother is Mum, or "she who must be obeyed" and I'm in my 30's! It does vary greatly in Scotland e.g. Ma in Central Scotland, Maw West Scotland (Glasgow), Mither North Scotland (Aberdeen)
Mam or Mamma, I live in s.wales too HG.

I'm from Bedfordshire & I used to call my Mum - Mum.

My eldest daughter calls me Mum & the youngest calls me Mum & Ma!

Mum from Mother I see but Dad from Father is another step removed. How did we get this word? Is it a baby thing? Da easier to say than Fa.
I have a Mom (I'm from Cannock, Mom and Dad are from Walsall) and find it very frustrating that I can't get a card with it on. She has always had mum or mother cards. I moved oop narth 13 years ago and began to wonder if it was just our regional way of pronouncing 'mum' until I attended a funeral in Walsall a few years back and noticed that all of the graves of females said mom, rather than mum.
