I remember that day vividly - my daughter was a baby & I was only 23. To this day I remember seeing the news highlights and hearing the football commentator of that day saying in an incredulous voice "Oh my god - look at that man on fire. And he only came to watch the football......"

An awful tragedy. Images that will stay in my mind forever.
56 dead. All those burned - I imagine, one of the worst ways to die. RIP.

I remember there being 3 awful tragedies very very close together in a short space of 4 years - the Bradford fire, then the Zeebrugge ferry sinking in 1987 followed by the Hillsborough disaster. It scared me off going on a cross channel ferry for years.
True salla ! Apart from those you mention there was also the Ibrox disaster in 1971 where 66 Fans died at the Rangers v Celtic match.
All very tragic. RIP

I was only 10 then redman - although of course I have heard of it, I have no personal memory of that disaster.
My mum was lying in a hospital bed in labour with me listening to the news report of the Herald of Free Enterprise as it happened!

Never new of the Bradford footbal fire though?

I remember the Bradford fire....we were watching the football results coming in on the television whilst something was our dinner cooking on the stove in the kitchen.
The pictures coming through on the tele were horirfic, I rememebr saying you could almost smell the fire - then we suddenly remembered the dinner in the kitchen and then found out the smell was OUR dinner burning. ....Terrible day.
Also the Townsend Ferry disaster, well remembered - the following week we were booked on the same ferry going to Zebrugge...we still went though, although a bit apprehensive.
Was it really 25 years ago ?..
39 Juventus fans also died that month when a wall collapsed during the European Cup final at the Heysel Stadium, Belgium. A bad year all round
