The egg. Dinosaurs laid eggs and bird feathers evolved from reptile scales; thus eggs were about before birds.
Most scientists believe that birds developed from reptiles, as SDDS says above. Since most reptiles to this day reproduce by laying eggs, it's rational to assume that the first bird-like creature came from an egg, too. (Genetic material remains constant throughout life, so the first creature that evolved into what we would consider to be a bird must have originally existed as an embryo inside an egg.) It would then have laid eggs and - over millions of years, perhaps - birds as we know them slowly developed and produced different species. The present-day chicken is one of these, but - 'way back when - its great-great-grand-daddy almost certainly came from an egg.
The egg pre-dated the bird, if you believe in evolution. Of course, fundamentalist believers in the Bible will say that God created all the creatures as creatures. In that case, the bird pre-dated the egg. Take your pick!
Divine act or a process of nature? Not so confusing really if you give the question the scrutiny it deserves.

All chickens come from eggs while not all eggs produce chickens. Some eggs are just eggs unless the rooster had his way in which case he came first . . . or was it the hen?
It was god, god made all living creatures therefore it was god
An egg and a chicken had just made long passionates love, the egg is sat up in bed looking very smug and smoking a cigarette, the chicken looks up at him in a disgruntled voice and says:... well that's answered that question!!!!!!
The best answer to this question that I have ever seen was a cartoon.
I t pictured a chicken and egg in bed together, enjoying a post-coital cigarette, and one saying to the other,
"Well, that answers THAT question".

I was in a restaurant in Dublin a few years ago. We ordered Eggs Benedict and Cajun Chicken, and the chicken came ages before the egg.
The chicken crossed the road to lay an egg. Oops, wrong question. But did I get the answer right?
The ******* *** first, trust me.
OK ill try again. The Male of the spieces came first, is that better, the male is called a *******, honest. ha ha pathetic censorship, just what the world needs.
And i was using the whole word, not just the first four letters.
i think the egg came first::::that the chicken inside was both genders to create live like there are in snalls
the chicken - Genesis 1 says God created every living thing, including every sort of bird. The first people Adam and Eve, when they were created were told to go and multiply. Vegetation was made as seed bearing plants. so I think everything was made with the seed in it to reproduce.
