Is the correct saying to compare "eggs with eggs" or "apples with apples"

the more usual version is apples with apples. if you are not making an appropriate 'same basis' comparison, you're usually comparing apples with pears.

no reason why you can't use any phrase you want to describe the situation though. why stick to cliches?
