I can remember my mum asking me if I wanted to go 'tats' as a small child. This meant that we were going out for a walk.

But can anyone tell me what this actually means or where it comes from?

Many thanks

Tats is short for tat-aahs, as in "Are we going tat-aahs?" - my spelling is phoentic rather than accurate.

I imagine it comes from that fact that when you were going out, you would say "Tat-aah" as in "Goodbye" which eventually evolved into the noun for the action of going out.

I remember it being the phrase used when I was a child - which was a while ago now - even more since I had another birthday last Thursday!

When I was a child, we had a black labrador that would go berserk if you said 'Ta-tah' (what we used to say instead of walkies). We used to play him up by saying Ta... then stop. He'd jump everytime!
We used tatty byes for good bye - so going tatties or tats meant um well going I suppose!
My wife, who is Australian, tells me that the phrase 'going ta-tas' was commonly used by Aussies in the days of her distant youth
