Dunmow (North Essex) used to hold an annual festival, one prize being a 'Flitch', or side of bacon.
I believe that the flitch was awarded as a prize to a recently-married couple who had not had an argument over the previous 12 months - and could prove it!
This gave rise to the popular expression "Bring home the bacon"
