Does anyone know why bogies are also called Crows ??

Never heard that one, and I have two slang dictionaries that haven't either. My intuition told me it's got to be dialect, and is confirmed as Northern dialect (hence why I haven't heard it) here http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=crow

Hi David H, Thanks for that. It must only be a Liverpool saying.


It spread at leats as far as Warrington. My guess would be that, when this word was in common usage, and I'm talking of more than 30 years ago, there was so much pollution (from coal fires) that what came out of your nose was as black as a crow.

They're crows in Stoke on Trent too, but don't know the origin, sorry.
I’m from Manchester and it’s Definitely from the coal fires / coal mines etc. Blow your nose and anything solid was a black crow
It’s from From the past when we had Coal fires and coal mining etc. Anything soft was in the handkerchief and the hard black remains were black crows
