...is ever evolving with new words, phrases etc....
Ive noticed that the way we talk also evoles, sometimes to my horror.
For some time now noticely on the telly amd radio, people are starting the their sentences with the word 'So......' Why?
Its just as annoying as people who constantly talk as if they are asking a question. I think Stephen Fry mentioned this when he appeared on Room 101.
Does this irk anyone else?
Oh yes .. and the way many people seem to forget that the letter 'T' should be actually used in a word. I listened to a 15 minute interview a few weeks ago and not once was the 't' actually used so it was like listening to a complete blur of nearly words...on the upside I was walking a mile or two to get to an appointment and I got so narked that I got there much more quickly! One of the things I hate is the use of the word kid for child...it seems to me that goats are taking over the world. Can I take my herd of goats to 'kids eat free' places...??
I totally agree! Invite instead of invitation, can I get instead of may I have, should of instead of should have. The list is endless! I do realise that language and speech evolve, but using the wrong word is bad.
The use of 'can' for 'may' is extremely common and has been around for as long as I can remember. If you go into a shop you are far more likely to ask, 'Can I have...' than 'May I have...'
Exactly my point. 'Can I have..' is perfectly acceptable, 'Can I get...' less so, depending on the question. 'Can I get a bus to town from here?' is fine.
It's not starting sentences with 'so' that annoys me, it's people starting the answer to questions with 'so'. And there's a reporter on Sky who never pronounces the g on the end of words, and says 'goin' , tryin' , 'havin' Can't remember her name - very annoyin
I avoid correcting AB members if I feel their English language is poor, because mine is far from perfect. However, I do dislike Radio and TV Presenters who use the expression..'more importantly'.. when they mean 'more important'. Also, pronunciation is often bad. For instance,I have heard such as an extra R .... ' withdrawring from the EU ' ' his drawring is'.....etc, etc.
