is there a word or phrase to descibe a person or situation such as -

if you say you dont agree with the death penalty - in their mind that somehow means you support murderers etc

or if you say you prefer something, it therefore must mean you hate the opposite

or if you say something is important must mean you think the opposite is unimportant

i know someone who makes it impossible to discuss anything with because they go from 0-60 with everything, instant defensiveness, outrage and the needs to say 'but what about?' whether is relevant or not
you have to clarify and spell out every little permutation and nuance of every given situation because if you dont it means you are saying the opposite of what you said applies to the people you havent literally mentioned
(its also a bit like the 'not all men' thing)

A twit? :-)
A snowflake. (Having a similar problem with younger daughter - if I'm not 100% behind her then I'm 100% against her!!!) Tearing my hair out.
Small minded?
Sounds just like AB... I don't know if there is a word.
"Black and white thinker" is the closest I can come to answering your question:

See here for the psychological theories relating to it:

A roaster
Do you mean when it gets twisted too, joko. I think this comes under Andy's so-rule.

Something like-

"I don't particularly like blue"

"So you are saying everyone wearing red should be shot??"
Contraversial
Buenchico - having read your links I now know why we have had regular bust-ups all her life (from being very tiny). Now I need to work out how to get her speaking to me again at the moment. Doh!
"Extension" is the term used in the classic "Straight and Crooked Thinking" (Robert H Thoules) ie extension of the opponent's argument.
Mr Hughes has been alerted and will be along shortly to deny ownership of his rule of so, Pixie.

So there. :-)
Lol :-)

thanks everyone

not looking for an insult, though i would imagine the idea of being accused of such a thing would possibly be insulting

pixie - yes kind of like that but i think most of the time the twisting isnt deliberate, its genuinely how her mind works!

one i've seen online a lot from others is, if you dont want to instantly mutilate all paedophiles, and suggest maybe trying to help them medically or something, you must either support them or worse be one of them!
i realise some people do it almost on purpose, when their position in the argument has become unstable and theyre unsure where to go next with it, so try to derail things and steer things away

i want something that actually describes whats happening - stuff like black and white thinker and small minded and extension - while correct - dont really clarify in what way the person is being that way.

i thought maybe contrarianism, but that doesnt really work either.

i want a word that when said, anyone would know what you mean - or at least could look it up and know exactly what it mean.

there must be something! :D lol
Bistate ?
unnuanced
polarised
