My Scottish mother in law used to say "You don't take butter to kitchen"  whenever I was having breakfast and buttered my bread or toast. Any idea where this saying originated ?

Do you know what she meant, seabrook? The only thing I can think of was that your ma in law may have thought the toast or bread should have been buttered from the dish on the dining table?
