A commonly seen road sign says "Road liable to flooding" and it irritates me! I think it should be "liable to flood" or "prone to flooding". What do others think? Am I being picky?

Yes, but I'm just the same about such things, I am a total nerd with it but all my friends are aware! I am sure you are correct, it will annoy me now. I don't drive, so maybe don't notice signs as drivers do but I have seen such signs. It doesn't sound right at all now you mention it!!
picky. Liable to flood, to me, implies that it IS going to happen regardless of whether it is dry or rainy, whereas liable to flooding indicates that it MAY happen if the weather dictates.
Very picky!!

"SLOW Children on Road" always fascinates me. Have they seen their exam results?
For what it's worth "roads liable to flooding" is actually quoted as an example of standard usage in the COD (Concise Oxford Dictionary)
"mud on road" always makes me think I'm going to drive round the corner to be greeted with....

I've been looking for years for the "Big Plant Crossing". All I ever see are dandelions etc at the roadside.
Oh no, when I was driving to Tenby I saw a sign that said that, I was like "grrrrr" get it right! lol x
Some years ago while driving in Ireland, I came across a road sign ‘Accident Black Spot’ which included a large black spot within the signage.
Well, Hymie, the UK used to have those same 'Accident Black Spot' signs all over the country. Then Mrs Thatcher decided that they were a bad advert for the government and councils, and led to the public asking, ''If it's an Accident Black Spot, why aren't those in authority doing something to make the road ther safer?''. So she had them removed.
I like the French sign which they place near schools "Prudence"
And the Irish give way sign "Yield"
On the Isle of Bute there are lots of road signs that state '20 is plenty'.

Not if you're a chain smoker, it's not.
I knew a girl whose name was Susan Plant. She used to hate the signs, "Heavy Plant Crossing".
One that annoys me is "Use both lanes" - they really mean use either lane, because using both lanes at once would be dangerous.
