Mini gear lever problem

My grandson has somehow managed to create a problem with his Austin Mini gearstick, it simply swivels round and sometimes locates a gear. can anyone advise with suggestions or as to where I can get diagrams - before I delve into it. thanks

Thanks for speedy reply, was thinking of lifting carpet and looking into gearstick base, thinking it may be just a collet or the like.

Now have gear lever out and it looks like the 'donut, at the end is smaller than it should be, am taking along to mini dealer spares to find out if this is problem.
