Secure payment padlock symbol

I shop on line and secure encrypted payment used to be symbolised by a gold padlock in the sym tray bottom right. Since my computer went in for a service (a fresh start from a formatted hard drive) the padlock doesn't appear any more, even though businesses I buy from refer to it. Can someone please tell me why and what I should do to recover it. Could it be something to do with a programme on my computer? I have Windows XP and Norton Security. Thanks for any ideas about this.

Does the padlock appear in the address bar at the top of the page?
In IE 7 the padlock is at the top, in the address bar, not in the system tray,

I suspect your browser has been updated.

Thank you Barry. I'll be more observant next time, but don't need to go shopping on line just at the moment. I'll come back on this point.
